The Institute of traditional Chinese medicine of the Chinese Academy of traditional Chinese medicine, founded in 1955, is the earliest national specialized institution for the study of traditional Chinese medicine in China. It has been recognized as the WHO traditional medicine cooperation center since 1983. Due to the discovery of artemisinin, Tu Youyou, a researcher of our institute, was awarded the Lasker prize for clinical medicine research in 2011, the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 2015 and the Warren Albert prize of Harvard Medical School, and the national highest science and Technology Award in 2016. In 2019, on the eve of the "70th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China", researcher Tu youyou was awarded the "Medal of the Republic" for his important contributions to human health and scientific and technological innovation of traditional Chinese medicine.

After 66 years of scientific research and practice, the Institute of traditional Chinese medicine has cultivated a number of scientific and technological backbones engaged in literature, traditional Chinese medicine resources and variety identification, chemistry, analysis, processing, preparation, pharmacology, toxicology and new drug research and development. There are more than 500 employees in the Institute, including the research center of traditional Chinese medicine theory and herbal literature, the research center of crude drugs, the research center of traditional Chinese medicine chemistry, the research center of analytical chemistry, the research center of traditional Chinese medicine preparation, the research center of traditional Chinese medicine processing, the research center of traditional Chinese medicine pharmacokinetics, the research center of traditional Chinese medicine pharmacology, the research center of biodynamic pharmacology, the safety evaluation center of traditional Chinese medicine (GLP), the research center of traditional Chinese medicine injection safety The R & D center of new Chinese medicine, the research center of biotechnology of traditional Chinese medicine, the data center of traditional Chinese medicine, the research center of integrated traditional Chinese medicine, the research center of aerosol inhalation preparations and the journal department, as well as the Chinese medicine resource center of the Chinese Academy of traditional Chinese medicine and the artemisinin research center of the Chinese Academy of traditional Chinese medicine. The Institute now has 1 National Engineering Laboratory, 1 Beijing Key Laboratory, 2 key research laboratories of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine, 5 tertiary traditional Chinese medicine laboratories of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine, 4 key disciplines of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine, etc. It hosted the National Academic Journals "Chinese Journal of experimental formulary" and "grassroots traditional Chinese medicine", and undertook the national academic journal "Chinese Journal of traditional Chinese medicine". There are training centers for master's and doctoral students of traditional Chinese medicine and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, and post doctoral stations of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine.

The Institute of traditional Chinese medicine has built a perfect technical platform for the basic and applied research of traditional Chinese medicine and the research and development of new drugs of traditional Chinese medicine, such as the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, the key technology of traditional Chinese medicine industry, the key technology of innovative drugs of traditional Chinese medicine. The theoretical research of traditional Chinese medicine focuses on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine properties, the principle of prescription compatibility, the processing principle and so on. The research on the key technologies of traditional Chinese medicine industry mainly focuses on the bottleneck problems in the development of traditional Chinese medicine industry, focusing on the identification and quality control of traditional Chinese medicine, the processing of traditional Chinese medicine, the engineering of traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy and the sustainable utilization of traditional Chinese medicine resources, so as to provide technical support for the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine industry. The research on the key technologies of innovative drugs of traditional Chinese medicine mainly focuses on the core links of the creation of new drugs of traditional Chinese medicine, focusing on the research on common key technologies such as traditional Chinese medicine information and data mining, activity screening and efficacy evaluation, chemical extraction and analysis, traditional Chinese medicine preparations, traditional Chinese medicine metabolism, pharmacology, toxicology and safety evaluation. At present, it has undertaken 260 projects, including key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, National Science and technology support plan, national major new drug creation projects, national key research and development plans, etc. It has won 354 awards for scientific research achievements, including 27 national awards; 33 new drugs have been developed, 257 works on traditional Chinese medicine have been published, and more than 5910 papers have been published.

In recent years, the Institute of traditional Chinese medicine has made great progress in high-level paper publishing, achievement awards, project funds, new drug research and development, enterprise services, talent introduction, international cooperation, environmental equipment upgrading, etc. In the past five years, he has published more than 760 SCI papers in internationally renowned magazines such as the lancet, nature medicine, nature communications, Angewandte Chemistry International Edition, the New England Journal of medicine, molecular plant, trends in Pharmaceutical Sciences, nuclear acids res, etc. A number of high-level scientific research achievements have won awards, including the first prize of the national science and technology progress award, the Chinese publishing government award, the special prize and the first prize of the science and technology progress award of the China National Medicine Association, the first prize of science and technology of the Chinese Association of traditional Chinese medicine, the first prize of science and technology of the Chinese Association of integrated traditional and Western medicine, Li Shizhen's pharmaceutical innovation award, the first prize of outstanding achievements in scientific research (Science and Technology) of colleges and universities, and so on, The level of award-winning achievements has been significantly improved. The funding for vertical projects reached a record high, and the number of major national scientific research projects increased steadily. Breakthroughs have been made in the research and development of new drugs. Jinchai antiviral capsule, Shuyan tablets, Jincao extract, Jincao tablets, dihydroartemisinin tablets, Huanglian Jiedu pills, Baoxin granules, Loropetalum chinense granules, etc. have obtained the national clinical approval for new drugs. Our institute is fully and deeply involved in the development of Qingfei Paidu granules and Huashi Baidu granules, new Chinese medicine drugs against COVID-19. Two new anti epidemic drugs have been approved for marketing. Our institute won the title of "advanced collective of national science and technology system in combating the COVID-19". In recent years, the horizontal service contract amount and funds in place of our institute have increased rapidly, and the scientific research transformation capacity has been greatly strengthened. A group of outstanding scientific and technological talents with overseas research backgrounds were introduced from internationally renowned universities and research institutions in the United States, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and other countries, which improved the internationalization level of the talent team and optimized the echelon structure.

It has carried out scientific and technological project cooperation and talent exchange with more than 80 countries, regions and international organizations such as who, the United States, Austria and Norway. As the WHO traditional medicine cooperation center, our institute has jointly built the "China Europe research center of traditional Chinese medicine and natural products" with Leiden University in the Netherlands, the "China Austria cooperation research center" with Graz University in Austria, the "Macao research and development center of traditional Chinese medicine" with the University of Macau, and the "Biopharmacology cooperation center" with the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Now it has 380million yuan of scientific research instruments and equipment such as 600 trillion nuclear magnetic resonance.
